🌏 The biggest Ultimate event in 8 years is about the start! 🇦🇺
Kick off tomorrow (or today when you're down under) at the WFDF World Ultimate Championships (WUC) 2024 on Australia's Gold Coast.
Writing this from Queen City, Cincinnati — home to the WUCC twice — visiting family. I’m incredibly hyped for this huge nations event at the birth place of ULTI.TV, Australia. As a European, I’m especially excited about the chances for our teams. France, in particular, has a serious shot at the podium and maybe even at knocking the USA off the top spot. 🥇 With their strong chemistry, European championship title (which broadcast I directed 🤓), and impressive recent performances, they could surprise everyone. Their draw keeps them away from the USA until the final, where anything can happen really!
The World Ultimate Championships (WUC) 2024 on Australia's Gold Coast! 🏝 This event promises a showcase of incredible athleticism and team spirit, with teams from around the world vying for the top spot in one of the sport's most prestigious metal.
The Mixed Division is particularly exciting, featuring the blend of male and female matching players that highlights the sport's unique collaborative nature. With teams like the USA, Canada, and Australia leading the charge, this division is set to be a thrilling battleground where strategy, chemistry, and synergy will decide the victors.
Key Stories:
USA: The USA comes in strong with a history of dominance, but they're facing fierce competition this year. Their roster boasts some of the sport's most well-rounded players, capable of both high-flying offence and rock-solid defence.
Canada: Canada's mixed team has a legacy of success and is eager to reclaim the top spot. With a lineup that blends seasoned veterans with rising stars, they're a team to watch closely.
Australia: The Perennial Silver Medalists
Australia has been a consistent force in the Mixed Division, often landing just shy of gold. They earned silver at the last WUC in 2016 and recently at the World Games. However, despite their strong history, recent performances, including losses at Windmill, have raised questions about their current form. With top talent spread across divisions and mixed results in recent tournaments, Australia's true level remains uncertain. Yet, playing on home turf might just give them the edge they need to finally break through.
“The nation that we’ve seen scraping ever closer year after year looks to be Australia… They’ve been progressively getting stronger… in the mixed division in particular.
We’re hoping that they might summit, the whole world must be hoping for it…until then, they remain first in line for second place. I’m not just dreaming this up… It’s not simply for my love of down under… cold hard facts support this theory”
— Stefan Rappazzo
Here’s a sneak peek at a story coming right after WUC: “The Ongoing History of Australia Mixed,” focusing on their consistent silver medal performances on the world stage. We’ll dive into their latest results and continue this series with a closer look at their journey.
What about France? 🇫🇷
France has a real shot at making the podium and potentially challenging the USA. As the current European champions with strong performances, including a close second at Windmill (versus the unbelievably stacked SuperTeam), they’ve proven their capabilities. Their team chemistry and experience, with several players from last year's beach world champions, set them apart. With a favourable draw avoiding the USA until the final, France's well-coached and cohesive team could surprise everyone and take the top spot if everything aligns perfectly.
How to watch?
As the tournament unfolds, fans can look forward to intense matchups, last-minute comebacks, and the crowning of (potential new) champions. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the sport, the WUC 2024 promises to be an unforgettable event in the world of Ultimate Frisbee.
