🕊️ In Memoriam — Ted Beute (1966–2026)

We close this newsletter with heavy hearts.

It is with deep sadness that the European Ultimate Federation (EUF) announced the sudden passing of Ted Beute, former Treasurer and Vice President of the EUF, on January 16th, 2026, at the age of 59.

Ted served the EUF from its very beginning in 2009 through 2024, helping build the federation from the ground up. From 2024 onward, he remained deeply involved as a member of the Spirit of the Game Committee.

Ted’s love for Ultimate — and for Spirit of the Game in particular — was unmistakable. It guided his work, his leadership, and the way he showed up for the community for over a decade and a half.

European Ultimate is stronger because of him.

I personally played countless seasons with Ted and worked alongside him for many international events, he was a true hero for the community, and he will be missed.

Japan nationals structure is four games, and it’s literally a pre-quarter, quarter, semi, final. So if an opens team loses any game before the final, they can’t get a bid for WUCC. And women’s you have to make semis to have a shot at WUCC.

The women’s draw has Mavericks on one side of the draw with some uni teams (some of them are still strong). Then the other main contending clubs (UNO Mud Swampybarg Huck) all on the other side of the draw. This is based on a seeding tournament that happened back in May.

It’s a brutal way to do WUCC bids! No pool play, no cross overs, no second chances!

As an example of this, Buzz Bullets lost their quarterfinal last weekend to a youth club, Gona. So they will not be going to WUCC. (Thanks Mish for all the info!)
